We’re going back to Shudder for Day 14. This time, I picked a new film released on July 15, 2022, which released exclusively on Shudder. I can’t stress enough how impressed I am with this platform. She Will is a film about an aging film star that retreats to the Scottish countryside with her nurse to recover from surgery. While there, mysterious forces of revenge emerge from the land where witches were burned.  

Directed by Charlotte Colbert and written by both Colbert and Kitty Percy, this film explores themes of nature, feminine power, revenge, and the power struggle between men and women. 

The film stars Star Trek alums Malcolm McDowell and Alice Krige. Krige plays the aging film star while McDowell plays the director that profited and took advantage of Krige’s character when she was younger. Kota Eberhardt plays the nurse that takes care of Krige’s character.  

This film is beautiful in a cinematic nature. The way it’s shot, the different blending of visuals, the nature setting. It’s a beautiful looking film.  

The performances of the three main characters are great. Krige and McDowell play their parts just as you’d expect veteran performers to do. Eberhardt, while having been in a handful of films, kept pace with them.  

Veronica, played by Krige, starts the film by losing what feels like her power. You’ll find out later in the film what that power is. She begins to connect with nature and harness the power of the witches that were burned by the men of the town. Using that newfound power, Veronica decides to make those that wronged her pay.  

I liked the subtlety of the messages this film was putting out there. It didn’t bash the message over the audience’s head, nor did it make you have to dig into the film to find it.  

Overall, I enjoyed this film. It’s probably not one that I’ll watch repeatedly, but it’s one that I’m glad I did take the time to view.
