So, I thought that when I selected this film, it was going to be set somewhere in Michigan. I guess I shouldn’t judge a movie by its name. For Day 29, I chose the Polish film Hellhole directed by Bartosz M. Kowalski.  

It’s set somewhere in Poland in the year 1987. A police officer (played by Piotr Zurawski) is investigating a series of mysterious disappearances. This investigation leads him to a remote monastery where exorcisms are being performed. Once there, the investigator sets out to discover the secrets that the clergy are hiding. 

The film starts out pretty dark with the attempted murder of an infant. It doesn’t actually happen, but it’s close. The baby turns up later as an adult and it’s pretty obvious who that is… it’s the detective. It’s not really a spoiler because it’s shown at the next transition alluding to that fact. 

It is pretty gory in terms of the number of dead, mutilated corpses. You see a few deaths, but not many. It’s the standard amount as you would expect to find in a Polish monastery where they perform exorcisms.  

It is a slow burn of a film and I had to watch it in two sittings because I kept falling asleep the first time. The best part is the ending because there’s this scene that’s sorta unpredictable and I loved it.  

Overall, I thought it was an okay film that didn’t really go too crazy. It was just crazy enough by the end that it made up for the slow burn.
